August 2013 Meeting – Picnic/Plant Tour
Instead of a regular meeting, GWAPA hosted a summer picnic August 24th at Lake Needwood in Rockville, Maryland. In addition, Cavan Allen conducted a tour of plants around the lake.

On July 27th, Rob Peterson, Jen Williams, Mike Potvin, and Batfish Aquatics welcomed members and non-members to tour their fish rooms. The day concluded with a BBQ/Picnic at Batfish Aquatics.
GWAPA’s June 22nd meeting was held at the Merrifield Garden Center in Fairfax, Virgina. A representative from RapidLED spoke on LED lighting for planted aquariums. After the talk, members participated in a hands-on workshop to build their own LED fixtures using materials from RapidLED.com.

Robert T Ricketts 55 Gallon Low-Maintenance Tank Substrate: Plenum based with mixed Estes' Nutmeg and Flourite Filtration: Two internal Eheims for mechanical filtration, plus a prefiltered external Eheim 2213 for bio. Lighting: 1-Two-tube strip light, 1 single-strip light. 12 hours/day. Plants: Val, Crinum, Anubias nana and a couple of other small nana cultivars, A. nana petite, Marimo balls, and Java Moss Fauna: school of glass cats, a school of Debaui cats, Otos, one male cherry Barb, Amano and Red Cherry shrimp, ramshorn and common pond snails.
