Killing snails with CO2?

Post by chris_todd »

I just read this fascinating thread on the OrchidBoard, and it got me thinking about the snail infestation we have in several tanks:
http://www.orchidboard.com/node/5

Basically, this guy was having problems with millipedes and slugs in his vivarium. So he put some dry ice in a couple of cups, poured hot water over them, and closed the viv. Next day, dead millipedes and slugs.

We already know how easy it is to stress or kill your fish with a CO2 overdose, why couldn't this be used to kill snails? Just move the fish and inverts you want to keep to another tank for a day, stop all surface agitation (and maybe turn off your filters), then crank the CO2.

Has anyone here ever tried this? Other than possibly killing your biological filter, and leaving you with a bunch of snail shells to remove, what potential drawbacks can you see that I might have missed?
