Halogen lights

Post by dSerk »

Will anything grow under halogens? Is the heat or the light the real problem?

Might make a decent spot but the light spectrum would probably be off and they use a lot of energy.

I just got a 30" T5 36W at Big Als for $34 w/bulbs. At that price it is hard to beat.

I was going to build my own small fixture for a tiny planted betta bowl. It's only about half a gallon. (BTW, glass ice buckets make nice big betta bowls.) Now I'm betting a halogen would just cook the fish, and the spectrum seems a bit more red-biased than is ideal. I played with a halogen utility light for photographing my tanks and I really liked the results. The pics almost looked "sunny."

I've ordered one of those groovy LED lights so I think I'll try that instead. I'm getting one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0230535360

$34 for the fixture? How many tubes?

If it's the same one I got:

(currently $37)
it has two tubes - one 6500k and one "Colormax full spectrum". It's been working great on my 20 long.

BigAls currently has the 48" one (56W) for $48.

Dan, please let us know your results with those LED lights. That's a heck of a price if they're bright enough for aquarium use.

For a while I was worried I just found bargain-priced garbage. That's usually the case when I find a "steal." The unit should arrive this week; I'll let y'all know how it goes.

I plan on using them on just a little betta bowl. About half a gallon, no more than 8 inches of water column. After that.... well, I suppose I could just clip it to the side of one of my tanks.

The Big Al lights are also thin. Which is nice when you have several tanks stacked on top of each other. They are not high output but are more energy efficent.

I am real happy with them and they are still on sale. I think I must have paid $37 but even that is a great price.
