3 questions

Post by B Considine »

1) My java fern is dying off in my 30. This tank has slowly become my catch-all tank for trying stem plantsion. Could the java die off be due to all the stem plants out competing the java for nutrients? I note that my bolbitis and various anubias appear fine.

2) I have 2 small A. nana in the nano tank. Recently, new leaves unfurl only to be essentially the middle spine of the leaf and the outer edge. The center is empty. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I suppose it could be snails, but wouldn't the snails be more indiscriminate? Older leaves are fine.

I dose Excel daily and Flourish weekly in both tanks.

3) Nano has hydra. What's a good way to get rid of them?

Any thoughts/solutions appreciated.

For 1 and 2 we need more info before we can bluff a seemingly good answer. pH, water hardness, temperature, tank occupants, that sort of thing.

Hydra hate water pollution, double up the Excel and Flourish dosing, do a complete water change, make life miserable for them.

If you've got bait, I've got wasabi!

Thanks Sean,

In the 30, pH is approx 6.8, don't know hardness, temp mid 70s, lighting is somewhere in the 50 watt range and is on for 10 hrs/day. Occupants are tetras, otos, an ancistrus, several nerites, corys, and 1 cranky SAE.

Thing about this tank is that much of the java now dying has been in the 30 for a solid 15 years.

In the nano, the pH is 7.2ish, hardness is very low (lower than the test kit used at SCALES). There are no occupants other than pond snails and the hydra.
