Apistogramma viejita vs. Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi (vote!)

Post by Aaron »

Rob and Kris have me wanting cichlids in my 75 gallon tank. I'm going to add one of those two dwarf cichlid species to my 75 gallon community tank. I found good sources for both fish and now I have to make a decision. I decided to start a poll here so you all can help me decide. Thanks for voting and feel free to comment as to why you voted the way you did.

I think that you would be more prolific with the Apisto but the Nicholsi has the better color. You need to decide which you want more. A step down in looks to get more or the striking good looks with a more difficult breeding. I vote for the Nicholsi although I would love for you to breed the Apisto so I could actually get some of the Viejitas

Well, when you're over here next, you'll have to check out the viejitas in person. I've got a beautiful pair that I've been feeding blackworms, and will move into their "honeymoon suite" shortly. Hopefully, I'll have luck with the breeding. :-p

All this apisto talk has me wanting them too! But I like my shrimp a little to much. One of the reason I ditched the africans. Pseudo species or African mbuna are pretty nasty. My knowledge of dwarfs is very limited, but if they are of any relation you may have problems with them being aggressive.

Seeing Kris's viejita that is what gets my vote, very cool looking fish!

The Pseudocrenilabrus Nichols will probably do better in your plant tank because Apistos should really be in a PH of about 5.0 and I don't know how well your plants will do at that level. Also the Pseudocrenilabrus Nichols are mouth brooders so its easier to separate the babies by catching the mom and isolating her when she's holding. The males can harass the females so I would suggest getting a harem with 3-5 females. I think the Males of both species are equally pretty. The tie breaker would be the Apisto females are much better looking than the Africans.

The PH requirements for apistos vary from fish to fish, but most will tolerate 6's and 7's. You only have to get done with 5 if you want to breed some of the blackwater types.

I say go for the Apisto. Eventhough it may or may not spawn in that tank.

Apistos are smarter; therefore more interesting behavoir to amuse you and your family.

I think that one of the females of my Pseudo's is holding eggs in her mouth. Hopefully I am around when they come out. I am thinking of moving the male while I am home this weekend. Oh and my Apisto Panduro female is in breeding color too so hopefully something comes of that as well.

Woo woo
Maybe baby fishies for Christmas

Pseudo is actually holding fry as I saw her spit one out tonight. Frustrating that I wont be around enough to really raise this batch up.
I still cant tell if the Apisto Panduros have laid eggs or not.
