Have you heard of or used alginite as a substrate? I'm not sure you can buy it in the States as a friend of mine in Hungary told me about it upon hearing about Sean's substrate. In Hungary all the soils you can buy are 90% peat and 10% fertilizer. Here is a link for more info:
