Catalina Aquarium Lights

Post by mab »

I just spoke with Jim at Catalina Aquarium regarding the defective light which I returned and they received on 6/12. They had not even opened the box I sent so obviously my replacement was not on its' way to Reston.

He examined the light - the capacitor was blown out of the ballast. He was really surprised since he upgraded ballasts in the last year and the new ballasts are costing him twice what he used to pay. BTW: the cardboard in the housing is not the problem.

He says that anyone else experiencing problems should call and talk to him directly.

In conclusion he promised to immeditely ship out a replacement!

You will need a soldering iron, they are nasty when the blow. It basically spray molten metal all over! I saw one burn through a stack of folders in about 3 seconds. This was by a genus in my digital electronics class in college

Have an iron. Might hit Radio shack with the bugger in hand and see if they can match the blown capacitor, just for giggles... not for a while though, heading to New York for a week, visit family.

Finally setting my tank up with the fresh bag of amazonia. Much, much better I must say. The cloudiness actually settled really really quickly, unlike last time.

I'm going to be out of town for much of the rest of this month, and may have to submit my Nano Aquascaping Contest photos early. A couple of questions:

Should the photos be any particular format, and is there a maximum size?

Are we limited to one photo, or can/should we submit a couple of different views?

And the address is gwapa@gwapa.org?

Thanks.

Good questions. Firstly, yes, the email address to submit pictures to is gwapa@gwapa.org. Or, if you'd rather PM to me, that works too.

I would prefer that these photos be in JPEG format, as we're just going to post them up on the forum for everyone to vote on. In that regard, try and scale them down to about 500-800 pixels wide. That should limit the file size under 300k. You can send me larger files, but you may run the risk of them getting filtered out by our mail server. If they're too large, I will scale them down myself, retaining as much quality as possible, before posting to the website.

I hadn't thought about multiple photos before. At the least, you should definitely submit a front-on shot, so that each entry can be judged to from the same angle. Beyond that, if you want to submit multiple views, that's fine so that as the views were each taken at the same time. It wouldn't be fair to submit photos from different periods of time.

Good luck! Remember, the deadline is October 1st for photo submissions.
