Regarding the filter, I'm an Eheim supporter. I have 3 tanks, all using Eheim. I overfilter, so I don't have have to clean them out but every 4 months or so. They're very quiet. Example, I have a PRO III sitting right next to a tank, and all there is is a very faint hum. Not even the wifey minds. Lighting, for the price (being budget minded) I picked catalina. Substrate, there's several, I've used Eco and Fluorite. CO2, GET IT! Fish, I first started as solely fish, so I MUST have them, and am balancing the two, not just focusing on plants.
