Plant Deficiency Chart

Post by krisw »

I stumbled across a great illustration showing various symptoms of nutrient deficiencies in plants. Figured I'd share:

I think I am going to print this out and tape it under my aquarium. Thanks Kris!

I've seen that chart before on plantedtank, apparently everyone there, especially tom barr, hates it

A number of things, like being too generalized and formulaic, and it doesn't include CO2 as a factor, which tom barr is obsessed with. Also, it defeats the purpose of EI dosing since it assumes all nutrients being equal except for a single limiting one. It was a while back so I don't remember exactly what was said. I personally think it's a decent guideline.

Ah, I see. I suppose any simple chart is going to have its limitations, but I do feel this is a helpful starting point for determining what is going on. For instance, I often start a tank off with standard EI dosing, but then tweak it downwards after awhile. If I know what to look for in the plants, that helps me see if I've gone too far.

Why tweak it down?
