Painting tank background

Post by Cristy Keister »

I think painting the back of my 75g might be the best background option. Because it has a plugged hole near the top, I can never get the plastic/vinyl backgrounds perfectly flat and water drops get underneath and it shows big time.

So what kind of paint should I use? Is spray paint the only good option or can brushed-on paint be used?

I'd also like to paint the bulkhead inside the tank. What type of paint is fish safe?

This is what I have used to paint the backs of several of my tanks:

Rust-Oleum, Flat Protective Enamel (it's spray paint)

I got it from Home Depot.

I don't know about inside paint.

I would spray it. The brush strokes could show through and would take several coats. The spray paint Victor mentioned should work fine.

I have painted the back of my tanks both ways. I prefer to spray, but will roll if the tank is already set up. Which I am about to do this week...

What color do most of you use? On my reef tanks, I have used both blue and black.
