Filter media

What kind of filter media should I be using in my new Eheim 2222
cannister filter? I am assuming I should exclude activated carbon or any
other kind of chemical filtration for that matter. There are several
compartments and I plan on using a small sump between my overflow
and the filter...possibly even pre-filtering at the sump stage.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...
