Carniverous plant media

Post by Ghazanfar Ghori »

Made a new batch of media today
My code: M005
1 liter of distilled water
1/2 strength MS (Phytotech M524)
30g sugar
1.5 ml PPM
2 ml BAP (1 mg/L)
Purple food coloring
6g of Agar (Phytotech A111)
pH adjusted to 5.6

This media should work well for most carnivorous plants for Stage 1 and Stage 2. Transfer to plain 1/2 strength media after 6-12 weeks for root growth (Stage 3). Optionally, 2 ml of NAA (1mg/L) can be used instead of BAP in the recipe above for root growth media.

For Drosera species (Sundews), here's the protocol for establishing the explant via leaf pullings.

Select a healthy leaf of two - dewy and clean. Younger leaves are better.

Decontaminate with
Alcohol dip for 1 second, 20 minutes in 10% bleach, 10 minute rinse in sterile distilled water with 1ml PPM.
Cut off the cut end of the leaf and discard.
You can cut the leaf into 1" segments if need be.
Establish on media stated above.

In 6-12 weeks, you should have good growth, and you can subculture or transfer to plain media for rooting.
