Ok good, I thought I had done something wrong when I pulled 40lbs of crap out of 80lbs of "soil".

well I figured out an option for the article as well then, I use a fish net to skim the water on the second soaking to eliminate a good majority of the detritus. I also figured out through a bit of playing that if you agitate the soil it will break a lot of the twigs out into the water column where they can be skimmed, be aware that you will end up wrist deep in soil and with pitch black hands.

I noticed when I started sifting by hand that there is broken auto glass all the way to crushed granite and river rock in my bag at least.
