I'm inclined to schedule the collecting trip for Saturday morning--meeting at the site at 10:00 a.m., collecting for a couple of hours, which would then give those of us who are interested time to head back to the CCA meeting in Silver Spring.
Let me know what you think.
If we went to the Shenandoah, it would really be pushing it to try to make it back to Silver Spring for the two p.m. CCA meeting, so we'd have to do the collecting trip on Sunday.

Sorry that this got splintered into a separate topic--we'd planned on Sunday, since the Capital Cichlid Association is meeting on Saturday. However, maybe meeting at 10 am Saturday would suit best, since it's fairly early--and CCA won't start until 2 in Silver Spring. However, then it would probably be preferable to find a location in MD, so folks can get over there. Kris? Any thoughts?
If we do go to MD, I don't know much about the regs. The DNR has a site for fishing permits (https://www4.wildlifelicense.com/md/). I can't determine if licenses will be required for plant collecting. It appears to be a grey area not really considered.

If you're not fishing in the water, you're not going to need a fishing license. As long is it's not a park, and you're not taking plants that are protected by law, you should be okay. If folks are more interested in plant collecting than fish collecting, I'm familiar with a site about 10-15 minutes from where CCA meets that has a number of different plants.

OK. If you intend to enter the water and collect fish, you will need a fishing license. Even though you're not angling, small fish are considered "bait" and you'd be collecting under the license's bait collecting provisions. Collecting in Maryland is more complicated for me than VA, but the site in VA is pretty close in and won't involve too much travel.
I went back and forth as to Saturday vs. Sunday. Damien, I think, said he had to work on Sunday, and so it will be nice to accommodate him. Also, as much as I'd like two days of fish events, it will help me to have one weekend day to accomplish things at home.

From what I see, it's Saturday 10/10 at a location in Md starting at 10 (so the CCA folk can make the meeting). If you want to gather fish, you must get a permit (https://www4.wildlifelicense.com/md/).

Let me clarify. The trip will be inside the Beltway in McLean, Virginia where Old Dominion Road crosses Pimmet Run. Although it's in Virginia, it's as close to Silver Spring as the Maryland collecting sites I'm familiar with, which are all in upper Montgomery County.
You don't need a permit, you need a Virginia fishing license. You can get that on line at http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/.
I'll post directions later or tomorrow. I'm checking with Bruce Hahn, who knows the site. I've asked him to provide landmarks or locations that I can enter into a google map search. (The description needs to be more precise than "the Old Dominion Road Bridge that crosses Pimmet Run.)

It seems that folks are more interested in plant collecting, than fish collecting, so we're going to cancel this fish collecting trip, and try and put together a plant collecting one tomorrow at the same time if there's enough interest and the weather cooperates.
