Re: Fluval 406 alternative

The Eheim classic and apparently people feel like they're bullet proof. I'll check out the G6 and Cobalt.

Any other filters worth looking at? The cabinet won't take an FX-5/6, haha

Re: Fluval 406 alternative

For the G, you're pretty much stuck with their mechanical filtration. Plus side is I haven't had to replace that for over a year on mine with regular cleaning. You can simply remove their chemical filtration blocks and use Purigen or other medium (charcoal bags, etc) in its place. I do use Purigen ...

Re: Fluval 406 alternative

Cobalt only makes the EXT; I don't think a 60-gallon planted would be taxing the unit, at all. I've got about 15 of them in service right now, and I like them. They're not perfect, but they're miles above the Fluval, and I like them wayyyy better than the Eheims. The big downside to them is that th...

Re: Fluval 406 alternative

I like the Fluval G series, but it definitely requires you to clean the mechanical filter every couple of weeks. For me, I like this necessity as it keeps me on top of things, but if you're looking for a more hands-off accumulation of putrid sludge in your filter, other options are better. I would ...

Re: Fluval 406 alternative

I'm not a fan of Eheim. I think they're ridiculously hard to service, have a lot of bypass, and I've found them to be prone to leaks. Others are big fans of the Cult of Eheim, but then again, half of you are using an iPhone..... :P I'm a big fan of the Cobalt EXT. It's unique in that the pump isn't...

Fluval 406 alternative

Hey guys, I'm looking to swap out my 406 that I've had for 3 years. It's starting to make noise - I called tech support and they are sending me a replacement impeller cover. I've had the intake valves snap and empty my tank. I'm also convinced there is quite a bit of bypass. Aside from Fluval's tech...

Re: CO2 Refill

Thanks, I'm glad to be back! That helps. I'd prefer to get a larger tank and refill less often vs taking 3-4 2lbs tanks to Sports Authority in VA and pray their CO2 system is working - I've called and then gone in and they realize it's empty... /sigh

CO2 Refill

Hey guys, it's been a long time since I've posted. I'm bringing my tank back online and I'm considering a new CO2 setup. I currently use 24oz paintball tanks and I have to refill them at a sporting goods store. I am considering purchasing a 10lb tank but I have no idea where to have it filled up. I ...

Re: Powerhead for Circulation and CO2 distribution

I find it does make a difference. You could try a powerhead like this one. http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewitem.aspx?idproduct=TA3191&child=TA3191&utm_source=adwordsfroogle&utm_medium=cse&utm_campaign=adwordsfroogle&utm_content=TA3191&gclid=CP605Z--5rQCFcuZ4AodWg8Axg It wo...

Powerhead for Circulation and CO2 distribution

I'm trying to optimize flow and CO2 distribution and I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference of if there's any consensus on how to set it up. CO2 diffused throughout filter output with intake and outflow set up next on left side of the tank so the water flows in a circular fashion around the tank...
