I have a friend in Seattle that wants to set up a small basic planted tank. He is not a big planted tank hobbyist, but he is familiar with things like light and CO2. I used to dump mine right in. The fish would often "taste" them as they fell to the bottom. No one died.

I have never considered the Raleigh auction a place to get plants. I haven't been in years. If I can ever get back going, I'll have to go sometime. Sounds like some good finds.

Average life of a ballast might be 18 years, but I had 2 that I was using for orchid lights croak within a year. You are past that, but I wouldn't count on 18 years.
