Indian Whisker Shrimp - Segrest carries them - so it's likely that's the source of the contamination.

The reagents arent that expensive. 7 euros to 19 euros ($10 to $25) for 40 tests. For an apples to apples comparison - Nitrate test (40 test) is 12 euros = ~$16. Amazon has the API nitrate kit for about $11 (90 tests) - so yes, you're right, its more expensive, but costs are not crazy obscene. Might...
