March 2010 Meeting

The Year of the Aquascape forged ahead this month, tackling the linchpin of aquascaping, the hardscape.

Kris Weinhold conducted the talk in the meeting hall of Grace Lutheran Church in Bowie. Further insight was provided by some of the more experienced layout “artistes” in the club. Kris has a recap on his blog, Guitarfish. Around a dozen 10-gallon aquariums with sand substrate were placed around the hall and club members were invited to create a hardscape using a variety of rocks collected locally as well as some Manzanita wood purchased by the club for this exercise. The atmosphere was collegial and collaborative, as members freely shared their opinions, expertise, and eye for the golden ratio.

After the workshop, the club held its monthly auction. Along with a wide variety of plants, the Manzanita was auctioned off, so that members could take the wood they’d just used home, to use in real life. Even the aquariums were sold.
