January 2007 Meeting

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

GWAPA’s January 2007 meeting was held at Viktor Gyorffy’s home in Montgomery Village, MD. Viktor maintains at least half a dozen low-maintenance tanks in his home, all of them heavily planted. At the meeting, Viktor described his technique, which does not include heavy dosing, CO2, or frequent water changes. Instead, he manages to use low fish loads and undemanding plants to create beautiful tanks without a lot of the effort that comes with high-tech tanks. All of his plants looked healthy, and the rainbowfish that populate his tanks are magnificent. Viktor has bred many of these fish to grow out his population.

Other business at this meeting included a synopsis of the years’ events. Ghazanfar made an exciting announcement that we will be placing a group order for ADA goods through a local store within the next week or so. Any members wishing to participate should watch the forum for more information this week. Ali Khan also volunteered to host the February meeting.

Finally, we had a tremendous auction this month! The diversity of both common and extremely rare plants might be our best yet. I’ve decided to list the plants at our auction as an example of what can be found at our meetings: Kliner Barr Swords, Hottonia Palustris, Ludwigia breveps x arcuarta, Rotala sp. ‘Nanjenshan’, Riccia, Ranunculus inundatus, Green Cambomba, Rotala sp. ‘Vietnam’, Rotala sp. hippuris, Polygonum sp. ‘Porto Vello’, Lagenandra meeboldii ‘pink’, Polygonum sp. ‘pink’, Crasula helmsii, Bacopa ‘Araguaia,’ Ranalisma rostrata, Fissidens foatanus, Pogostemon yatabeanus, Potamongeta dentatus, Utricularia graminifolia, Hygrophilia sp. ‘Tiger’, Val. nana, Tonina Fluviatilis, Limnophilia sp. ‘mini’, Limnophilia sp. ‘Guinea’, Echinodorous ‘Sao Paulo’, Spiral Val, Pogostemon helferi, crypt. wendtii ‘green gecko’, Sagittaria subulata, Hygrophilia augustifolia, Java Moss, Hygrophilia difformis, Hygrophilia ‘Sunset’, Bacopa sp. ‘pink’, crypt. balansae, windelov’s java fern, bolbitis, taiwan moss, crypt. molmanei, Hemianthus callitrichoides, Pogostemon stellata, Rotala indica ‘red’, Blyxa Japonica.
