Reed Plastic in Rockville sell plexglass and lexan(much more expensive) in sheets up 4'x8'. The prices were reasonable. The gluing is easy, but you would want to make a gig to hold the pieces together so they don't move. They also make bending tools that can be used to make bowfront tanks and tanks with no joints on the front of the tank.
My experience with building plexiglass boxes is they are not that hard, but the setup time can take a while.
give it a try. Smaller tanks hold less water so if they explode it won't soak as much of your living room.
